ramblings of an overweigth old fart trying to get fit!

Just over 2 hours till the new year arrives and the old one can leave, good riddance to it, there has been more downs than ups during the past 12 months so I will be glad to see the back of it. My weight loss has not really been what it should of been but I am blaming nobody accept myself for that one. I need to find that switch in my head that makes me eat endlessly for the sake of it and turn it off. I know the diet friendly food I like and I know how much of them I can eat, I just have to stick to them and them only.

My bike riding has been up and down, just when I seemed to be moving on something has happened and set me back. I enjoy the riding although I need to find new routes locally to ride as the couple I do ride are becoming monotonous and travelling to ride a trail is not always an option.

In an earlier post I mentioned Christmas tradition, well it seems as though I have an end of year tradition starting. Went out for a ride today and approaching the half way mark I took a rest on a long steep climb and looking down at the front wheel I noticed a broken spoke. Last year on my final ride of 2009 I noticed a broken spoke, hope this one does not continue into a tradition. Fortunately the LBS was able to fit and true the wheel for me before shutting up shop for the day (and year).

The ride itself was going quite well, quite muddy in places, hard work but I was enjoying pushing myself. Will be going out tomorrow for a ride, not sure where yet have a couple of options, will see what develops when I get up tomorrow.

The only target I am setting myself for next year is an improvement, an improvement in my overall weight loss, an improvement in my diet (the food control bit) and an improvement in my riding. I am getting bored with all this new years resolution party and drink culture that happens on new years eve, the whole new year thing is just a scheme by the marketing men to make money for the business they work for. We will all go to bed to night and wake up tomorrow morning the same as we have done for years, the only difference being is that some of us will be several pound (£) lighter in the pocket and have a very sore head, to the rest of us it will be like any other day.

Well it just leave me to say I hope your new year bring you what you wish for

What ever it is that gives you your “get up and go” has left the building in my case. This morning the only thing that got me out of bed was the fact that I had to take my bike to the LBS for the frame swap. The drive to take the wife to work was slower than normal at that time of day as everybody was out early anticipating the delays on the A338. It did not make a lot of difference though as there was an accident actually in the single carriage way section on the A338 this morning which closed it north bound and once again brought the entire area to a standstill.

Having dropped the wife off at work I had to double back on myself and drop the bike at the LBS. Then I had to turn round and double back on myself again to make my way to the companies (I work for) local branch, spent a couple of hours there before doubling back on myself again to go home as I was spending the rest of the day working from home.

While I was at the LBS I never got to speak to the manager at the shop but there were a lot of Canondale boxes in the shop that looked as though they had been recently delivered, hopefully one of those was my new frame. With the new frame and the new forks I am having fitted at the same time and hopefully the gears sorted out, it will be like getting a new bike, can’t wait to try it at the weekend.

Tomorrow, I am (supposed to be) up early to go to head office, 05:15am is a struggle for me at the best of times, I think tomorrow will be no exceptions. To some extent I am glad that I don’t cycle to work as I would seriously struggle like Clive at “The Massive MTBer” does. I remember when I was younger and car free, I hated riding to work, I would have to ride to work on those cold wet mornings with the wind in my face and then ride home again with the wind in my face. The reason I don’t ride to work now is head office is 140 miles away. I don’t go there everyday but I do travel to many of our other sites and they are equally as far to travel and on a bike I think it would about a week (by the time I have plotted an off road route so I avoid those main roads), mind you would be an epic ride…………..
